Principal’s Blog 30th June 2022

School Disco

What a wonderful way to spend a Friday evening! Thank you to our P&F for organising such a fantastic event. DJ Hazebroek was in fine form all evening, keeping our students engaged and excited, thank you Mr Hazebroek! We were very impressed with his entertaining costume choices and musical ability. Thank you also to Jacob and Braiden Budgen, for the fantastic beats that kept us dancing all evening.

PSSA Lightning Carnival

Last Friday, 24th of June, a selection of our Year 5 and 6 students participated in the PSSA Lightning Carnival. Our students had an awesome day and represented St Damien’s CPS with pride, outstanding sportsmanship and behaviour. Thank you to the parents who volunteered their time and to our staff who gave up their mornings and break times to coach the students.

Year 2 Liturgy

Our Year 2s celebrated a beautiful Liturgy on Wednesday morning, focussing on the love of our families, the way our parents protect us, like Mary and Joseph protected Jesus and God’s unconditional love for us. Thank you to the Year 2 staff for preparing their students, to Mr Hazebroek and Ms Hilson for supporting with the Liturgy and to Father Shemil for celebrating with us in Father Vincent’s absence.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

On Tuesday, our Year 3 students participated in their Reconciliation Retreat and had a fantastic time with Karl Brown from Faith Retreats and tonight, they will be receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Reconciliation is a very special celebration of God’s love and forgiveness, and the joy of returning to a happy relationship with God. We keep our students and their families in our prayers as they strengthen their relationship with God and our Catholic community.

NAIDOC Week

Due to NAIDOC Week 2022 occurring in the school holidays, we will be celebrating as a community in Week 1 of Term 3. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians – whatever their heritage – to come together to learn about and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and their achievements, culture and contributions to our great land.

During the week students will be paired with a buddy from another year level where they will work together and complete a variety of cultural activities. The cultural activities will give the students an insight into Aboriginal culture and language.

If you are able to assist any day or time throughout the week, please email caroline.leighton@cewa.edu.au or cindy.cross@cewa.edu.au to provide us with a day and time preference.

Principal’s Awards

This week I have had the opportunity to celebrate some fantastic work with a number of students. Congratulations and well done to Dakota Westcott, Ngaire Crichton, Vera Marino, Aisha Pracilio, Jasmine Frost and Jacob Boon from Pre Primary Gold for their fantastic Narrative Writing, to Shelby Taylor, Jesse Spencer and Arlo Caine from Year 5 Gold for their creative adaptations of the poem ‘Jabberwocky’ by Lewis Carroll.

Congratulations!

On Monday 27th of June, our very own Mr Gooch was inducted into the AFL Umpires Association Hall of Fame. Mr Gooch umpired over 154 AFL games in Perth and Melbourne and was selected to umpire AFL exhibition games in London and Darwin. He also umpired 19 finals and two Grand Finals. Congratulations Mr Gooch!

Thank You

As Term Two draws to a close, I would like to say thank you to our families, for the dedication and passion you have for our St Damien’s Catholic Primary School community. It has been an honour and a privilege to fulfill the role of Principal in Mr Gooch’s absence and I thank you for your ongoing support.

We wish you a wonderful holiday break with family and friends, filled with blessed memories of your time together.

Take Care and God Bless,

 Caroline Leighton
