Principal’s Blog 27 June 2024

This week our school community has been celebrating NAIDOC Week. The theme for the NAIDOC Week in 2024 is, ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’.

‘Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families.’

The week started on Monday with a ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ along with some playing of the didgeridoo, by Levi Whitnell, celebrated by the whole school. Our students have been participating in some events and activities throughout the week, to recognise and celebrate NAIDOC Week. These activities have included students engaging in a workshop with, Isobel Bevis, author of “Nedingar Ancestors,” as well as all contributing to an artwork initiative that has been 2 years in the making

Farewell, Lynette

After 6 years of wonderful work in the school canteen, we sadly say goodbye to Lynette Rubie. Lynette has been a fantastic staff member and provided such fantastic service to the families and students in the school through her diligent and generous efforts in the canteen. We wish Lynette the very best as she goes on her travels for the remainder of the year and sincerely thank her for everything she has contributed to the school.

PSSA Winter Sports Lightning Carnival

Last Friday a lot of our senior students participated in the PSSA Winter Sport Lightning Carnival. This was an all-day event, with football, netball, hockey, volleyball and soccer being played throughout the day. St Damien’s School were very competitive during the day and more importantly, all competing students tried their very best and enjoyed the day.

Results for the day were as follows:

·      Soccer:          8th

·      Hockey:          5th

·      Football:         6th

·      Netball A:       1st

·      Netball B:       1st

·      Volleyball:      1st

Congratulations, Phoebe

Congratulations to Year 5 student Phoebe Gilbert for her amazing efforts and generosity in her donations to the Variety Club. Phoebe has spent the last few years growing her hair long enough to be cut and donated to the ‘Hair with Hearts’ initiative, where it can made into a wig for disadvantaged children suffering from hair loss. In the process, she also raised $1,485, to be donated to the charity. This is a fantastic result and Phoebe is to be truly congratulated for her efforts and for helping those less fortunate in our community.

Semester 1 Reports

Yesterday, parents received their child’s school report, via SEQTA. I encourage all parents to take the time to read through the school report with their child/children, as it is a reflection of the valuable learning that has taken place over the semester.

It is important to note that it is a ‘Mid-Year Report’, showing the growth and achievement of each student at this ‘point-in-time’. It does also mean that there is another semester ahead where students can continue to develop and meet their goals.

Please, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress, as reflected in the school report, please contact your child’s classroom teacher early next term to discuss further.

Overall, I am pleased with the efforts made and the learning achieved throughout the school. I also acknowledge the effort the staff have put into preparing the school reports, ensuring they are a valid document which highlight the learning progression of the students.

School Disco

Congratulations and a huge thank you goes to all of the parent volunteers, through the P&F, who assisted in the planning and running of the school disco last Friday. All of the attending students had a fantastic time singing and dancing during their allocated sessions.

Term 3 Start Date

A reminder to families that term 3 begins on Tuesday 16 July for all students.

Whole School Assembly

This Friday the 28, we have a whole school assembly in the hall, beginning at 8:45am. During the assembly, the Year 3 class will be presenting an item as well as St Damien’s  and Principal Awards being presented to the deserved students for their efforts and hard work over the term. All parents are welcome to join us for the assembly.
